Wooden Cubes as Photography Props: A Complete Styling Guide

Wooden Cubes as Photography Props: A Complete Styling Guide

Every photographer and content creator reaches a point where they need more than a flat surface. Wooden cubes and blocks have quietly become one of the most used props in product photography, interior shoots and social media content — and for good reason. They're neutral, versatile, and they add the kind of natural texture that makes images feel grounded and real.

Why Wooden Blocks Work So Well for Photography

The challenge with product photography is context. An object floating in white space looks like a catalogue image. An object sitting on or beside a natural wooden block looks like it belongs somewhere — and that sense of belonging is what turns a product image into a lifestyle image.

Solid wood blocks bring several advantages over alternatives like acrylic risers, painted boxes or foam blocks:

  • Natural grain adds visual interest without competing with the subject
  • Wood tones are warm and neutral — they complement nearly any product palette
  • Different sizes create instant height variation for layered compositions
  • They're robust — they won't scratch, dent or warp over time

How to Use Wooden Cubes in Your Photography Setup

Creating Height Variation

Flat compositions look static. Introducing objects at different heights immediately adds visual dynamism. Stack a 21cm cube alongside a 14cm and a 6cm cube and you instantly have three heights to work with — perfect for displaying a product range or creating a layered hero shot.

Using Cubes as Product Stands

Place your hero product on top of a wooden cube to elevate it from the background surface. A 14cm or 21cm cube works well as a plinth for candles, ceramics, plants, cosmetics, jewellery or any object that benefits from being raised. The natural wood finish keeps the focus on your product.

Negative Space Framing

Position a tall block to one side of your flat lay and shoot square-on. The block creates a visual frame that draws the eye toward the subject while adding depth. This works especially well for close-up product shots where you want texture without distraction.

Group Compositions

Three cubes of graduating sizes — 6cm, 14cm, 28cm — arranged in a loose triangular formation create a natural staging area. Scatter dried flowers, place a candle on the tallest, and rest your product against the smallest. This is a three-product shot in a single frame.

Choosing the Right Size for Your Work

Our solid wood cubes range from 6cm (ideal for close-up detail shots and small product staging) up to 35cm (a dramatic statement plinth for large products or wide-angle lifestyle scenes). As a starting kit, we'd suggest a 6cm, 14cm and 21cm — three sizes that cover most photographic scenarios and store compactly.

Rectangular blocks in various proportions are also available and useful when you need horizontal surface area rather than height.

Which Wood Finish?

All our cubes are supplied unfinished in natural solid wood — which is ideal for photography because unfinished wood has the most neutral, organic quality. You can wax or oil them for a slightly richer appearance, or leave them raw for a lighter, more Scandi aesthetic.

For product photography specifically, a pale oak finish tends to be most versatile — it works across dark, light and mid-tone backgrounds without shifting the colour temperature of your shot.

Beyond Photography

The same qualities that make wooden blocks excellent photography props also make them excellent interior styling accessories. Cubes that stage your products for Instagram are also perfectly at home on a coffee table, shelf or retail display. Most of our customers find they move fluidly between shoot backdrop and home accessory — which makes them an unusually good investment.
