Toine

A stone farmhouse in Montardit, in the Ariège, south-west France. The oldest part was built around 1400.

We renovated the whole building: structural work, walls and floors, doors, windows and shutters, the staircase, and the furniture and interiors, room by room.

The house looks south across open land to the Pyrenees. The joinery was made in our workshop and fitted on site.

The staircase is the centrepiece: turned newel posts, turned balusters up the flight and along the gallery, one handrail from the bottom step to the gallery rail, and a braced timber frame carrying the gallery floor.
