You have stairs that have seen better days, or plans for new ones, and the parts you can buy off the shelf don't fit the house. The newel is the wrong shape, the balusters are too thin, and the handrail won't meet what's already there. A staircase is the first thing people see when they walk in, so it has to be right.

We start with the newel post and build the rest of the staircase to match it: balusters, handrail, strings and treads, so the whole run belongs together.

Send us a photo of the post you have, or a drawing of the one you want, with the height and the timber: oak, walnut, ash, or whatever suits the house. We turn a match or a new design and show it to you before anything else is made.

The whole staircase

Once the post is agreed, we make the rest of the staircase to match: newel caps, balusters, the handrail with its joints and ramps, strings, treads and risers, and the gallery balustrade if there is one. Every part is drawn before it is priced, so you can see exactly what you are getting.

Toine

Toine is a stone farmhouse in the Ariège, in south-west France, renovated by us from the ground up. The staircase is its centrepiece: turned newel posts, turned balusters up the flight and along the gallery, one handrail from the bottom step to the gallery rail, and a braced timber frame carrying the gallery floor.

The rest of the woodwork in the house was renovated room by room: beams, ceilings, floors, windows, shutters and doors.
